The Studio

I am so excited to showcase my new photography studio! I’ve spent many years renting commercially, which has been lovely but it has always been my dream to work close to home. After lots of research I decided to invest in a bespoke cabin built by Cabin Master UK.

The team did a fantastic job of making my dream a reality and very quickly my beautiful new studio was built. My new commute was walking to the bottom of the garden.

The studio is a lovely size, filled with beautiful props and a cosy client area with soft seating, coffee making facilities and snacks. (Every parent needs snacks, right?)

Clients have use of the garden where they can let older siblings have some fresh air while we finish off newborn images.I love preparing for sessions now, I pop down in the evenings and set up for the next days shoot. I adore choosing soft colours for newborns and happy pastels for my birthday shoots. Each shoot is catered to your tastes and everything is freshly laundered for each baby/child. All shoots include full use of all luxury props which I source from all around the world. I have been overwhelmed with the feedback from clients. Each and every time they step into the studio, I hear the most lovely comments and it really does make my heart happy. I wanted my clients to love the space as much as I do and one year on it’s safe to say they really do.

Building the studio at home has been the biggest investment to my business yet but also the best. Cabin Master have been amazing to work with and provided me with a studio that will last for many years.

I hope you love the studio as much as I do and I hope to see you there soon,

Baby & Toddler Travel Essentials: Splash About UK

travel toddler baby

As a family we spend most of our lives next to a swimming pool, with my eldest son Cole being in a competitive swim club from age 8, it’s no surprise that we would love our youngest son Carter to follow in his big brother’s footsteps and develop a passion for swimming too.

Carter (23months) is a completely different kettle of fish, he’s a little more hesitant when it comes to new experiences so it was really important for us to plan ahead for our big trip to Mexico.

Packing for a toddler is no mean feat but luckily, we have lots of experience flying long haul and each year my planning and packing skills seem to improve, much to my husband’s delight!

We knew we would center most of our holiday around the beach and swimming pools so it was really important that I sourced swimwear that was practical in terms of safety but also something that would last the entire holiday.

I asked around in many of my ‘Mummy Groups’ and Splash About UK seemed to be mentioned over and over again so I thought it was best if we check them out. Their website has a whole range of swim essentials, we loved the choices of colours and patterns and decided to order: The Happy Nappy, The UV Sunsuit, and The Go Splash Swim Vest. They arrived a few days later, perfectly packaged and ready to pack.

The first thing we all think about as parents on holiday is protecting our children from the sun. Over the years we’ve tried and tested a variety of brands and they’ve often fallen short of our needs. We wanted something that not only looked good but was practical and actually protected Carter from the sun. Splash About’s UV Swimsuit not only looked great but we were assured that he would be protected with the UPF50+ sun protection even when wet. Long sleeved suits are perfect for keeping those little arms safe from any harmful sun rays!

The swimsuit was washed many times on holiday and still looks brand new after 2 weeks of use! Priced at £19.99, it is a little more expensive than a standard swimsuit but delivers on so many other levels that make it a worthwhile investment.

You can check out their full range here

The Happy Nappy was the most practical item we took on holiday. We loved the fact we didn’t need to take swim nappies with us, which is not only amazing for saving room in your case, it’s also environmentally friendly too! It was super easy to wash and dried quickly, which is key when holidaying with a toddler. The nappy fit perfectly snug but comfortable enough to allow Carter to run around and kick in the pool.

Splash About UK have also introduced a nappy liner option, which again is a fantastic solution to saving on swim nappies and giving you that extra peace of mind at the pool – no embarrassing accidents here!

The Happy Nappy comes in a variety of cool colours and patterns and at £10.99, it was a bargain – (I bought 2 of the Splash About Nappies, for a total of £22. Using normal Tesco/Asda/Boots etc brand swim nappies for the week, we would have spent over £30, and used up much more of our luggage allowance! Plus The Happy Nappy will be finding it’s way into my nappy bag – making it that much easier for my little water babies to enjoy splashing! You can view the full range here.

The Go Splash Swim Vest was on Carter for pretty much 90% of the holiday… ok so we didn’t let him sleep in it, but it really was our safety net around the beach and pool. We started off the holiday with Carter clinging to our necks in the pool and ended with a much more happy and confident toddler in the water, which was a joy to see.

The swim vest is the perfect flotation device when your little one is transitioning between a swim seat and gaining more swim confidence. It took a few days for Carter to feel secure enough to kick and float with his jacket on and after that, there was no stopping him. We loved that it was slim, compact and lightweight – perfect for packing too. Priced at £17.99, it is great value for money, because without sounding cliché, you really can’t put a price on your little one’s safety! You can view the full range here.

Overall, we rate Splash About UK’s swim accessories a 10/10.

The things we loved most were: the variety of choice online, slim packing, making them easy to pack, practical and comfortable designs and the quality was the best we’ve seen in any swimwear we’ve used previously.

The things we didn’t love: Trying to convince a tired toddler that he can’t sleep in his swim vest.

We look forward to adding to our collection and continuing Carter’s swim journey as he gets older!

Timeless Newborn Photography…

Having a baby is one of the most exciting, special and sometimes scariest things you will ever do in your life.

At Lauren Murphy Photography my aim is to capture those beautiful little features and special first days of your baby’s life with stunning photography in a cosy and calming environment.

Time flies by so quickly and before you know it your baby is crawling, walking and talking. Newborn photographs will be something you will truly treasure forever.

All newborn photo sessions are carried out at my professional and cosy photography studio in Blantyre, South Lanarkshire. The studio is within easy reach of Glasgow and Lanarkshire. You can relax in comfort in my luxury newborn studio room which is filled with stunning, high end photography props. Sit back on the sofa, sip your coffee, read a magazine or even have a nap, the choice is yours….

When is the best time to book a newborn session?

I always recommend parents book in any time after their 20 week scan. My diary fills up months in advance and I allocate a specific number of newborn slots each month. As babies usually don’t arrive on time we provisionally note your due date and ask that you contact me as soon as baby arrives so we can schedule your photo session.

Newborn babies are best photographed under 14 days old, with the ideal window under 10 days old. This is to ensure baby is sleepy and settled for the full session allowing me to pose them safely and also to capture those curled up features that only a newborn has.

Why book a professional?

Newborn photo sessions are unlike no other photography session you will ever attend. They are planned with precision and involve a whole ton of expertise and skill to be able to pose babies safely and effectively. Most of all a TON of patience is required, which luckily I have lots of!

A professional photographer will be trained specifically in newborn posing and will also have a sound knowledge of how to soothe baby and keep them settled for the duration of the photo session.

At Lauren Murphy Photography I pride myself in my knowledge and experience with newborns and babies, which has been a result of a previous career working with babies and also being a Mum myself I have real life experience. I have had the honour of training with some of the worlds best newborn and children’s photographers, which has made a huge impact on my skills as a photographer.

You CAN have your cake and eat it….

The question on everyone’s lips is “What exactly is a Cake Smash?” “Are babies given a cake just to smash it up?”

Well the short answer is YES, a Cake Smash Photo Session is when babies visit a photography studio to celebrate their birthday’s in style with a fun and interactive Cake Smash Photo Shoot, but for me Cake Smash isn’t ‘just’ about babies eating cakes, they are simply a celebration of that baby’s first year in life. Who doesn’t want to scream and shout about how adorable, clever and cute their baby is on their first birthday and show them off in beautiful, professional photographs to mark the occasion?

Originating from the US, Cake Smash Photo Sessions have been extremely popular in the last few years and were described as one of the most ‘weird and wonderful’ trends of 2014 by Netmums.

A combination of new tastes, textures and noises make Cake Smash Sessions the perfect way to celebrate your baby’s special occasion by doing what they do best….exploring!

See why MY Cake Smash Shoots were featured in the Daily Mail Online last year:

So what exactly happens during a Cake Smash Session?

My Cake Smash Sessions always start with lovely clean portraits first. Parents bring along a pretty dress or smart outfit and we take some adorable photos of the babies looking very grown up and smart.

Next we move onto the main event, the cake smash! A gorgeous cake is individually baked and designed by the very talented ladies at Whisk Bakery in Rutherglen.

The set is creatively put together to tie in all the little details from the beautifully designed cake to the balloons and backdrops, everything always works in perfect harmony.

Parents will have the choice of a fantastic range of specially made cake smash outfits.

From pretty pastels to bright colourful sets, I have something to suit all tastes!

Parents watch with delight as their baby explores a whole new world…CAKE! Some babies go straight for the cake, others have a play with the colourful balloons.

Baby is free to explore, taste and play with the cake at their leisure, once they’ve had enough we move onto a bubbly and warm ‘Tub Time’ where baby can splash around in the beautiful roll top bath and clean up after all that messy fun!

To round off a lovely photo session parents get to take away the remaining cake home to enjoy a slice with a nice cuppa.

The Result?

Super cute professional photographs to mark your baby’s very special first birthday. Parents truly treasure these photos as they symbolise how much their beautiful baby has grown in the last year.
